benefactor

benefactor
A Dickensian term of address, made well known by its use in Hard Times to Mr Bounderby by Mrs Sparsit, his housekeeper. This is the term she uses to his face; behind his back she addresses his portrait as ‘you booby’. In The Pickwick Papers Mr Winkle is rather more sincere when he calls Mr Pickwick ‘my friend, my benefactor, my honoured companion’.
